In a year full of experiments, the Opportunity House stands out as an audacious attempt to give a chance to people not used to being given anything. This is a portrait of its first academic year, told almost entirely in some of the students’ own words. This story is from the Summer 2021 issue of O Quarterly, available to you as an Oprah Insider. Chapters who do not have a house can be reached in the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life. There’s no right or wrong way to engage with art, but there are some films that clearly require more effort from the audience side in order to be effective. And while you can’t blame cinemagoers for just wanting to enjoy some passive entertainment, I think it’s always worth trying to meet a work of art on its own terms before judging it.

She then uses a pin to stab Eric numerous times and he falls through the attic door to the floor below. Partly inspired by the 1955 French film Les Diaboliques, first-time writer-director Rosman wrote the screenplay for the film in 1980, then titled Seven Sisters. The film was shot on location in Pikesville, Maryland in the summer months of 1980, with additional photography taking place in Los Angeles. He worked at Home Depot until he was fired by its “loss prevention” unit for giving his family too many discounts. Today he’s reading about bridge building for his summer internship at the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering. Fraternity and sorority chapter houses are managed and maintained by established housing corporations that own the properties and take care of major upkeep and repairs.

A group of sorority sisters are killed off one by one at a graduation party as a deadly prank they pull comes back to haunt them in The House On Sorority Row. Starring Kate McNeil and Eileen Davidson (The Young and the Restless), the fresh-faced cast of young actresses cheerfully bounce off the elderly house mother they resent for canceling their graduation party. The gleefully fun 1983 slasher by director Mark Rosman doesn’t reinvent the genre but skillfully executes a premise heavily inspired by such films as Black Christmas, Prom Night, and a touch of Diabolique. After a seemingly innocent prank goes horribly wrong, a group of sorority sisters are stalked and murdered one by one in their sorority house while throwing a party to celebrate their graduation. Both films are byproducts of their eras, definable by the celebratory liquor and booze toasts in each iteration. The House on Sorority Row circles its ladies as they jokingly rib but adore one another, while Sorority Row uses the ceremonial pre-game to highlight the problematic bitchiness of its backstabbing, shit-talking characters. Rosman’s adoration of 1955’s Les Diaboliques stresses suspenseful investigations as Katey (Kathryn McNeil) pieces together clues that lead to a jester-dressed manchild under the prude Slater’s (Lois Kelso Hunt) care. Hendler approaches villain stalks more linearly like I Know What You Did Last Summer or Scream, where it’s more about faces in a crowd and the spectacle of 2000s horror era slayings. The original implements morbid hallucinations and psychological unrest, while Summit Entertainment’s remake hacks through bodies without grand conspiracies or further embellishment. In Sorority Row, Meghan (Audrina Patridge) is missing — or that’s what the sisters of Theta Pi want authorities to believe.

Storyline

The girls, somewhat unbelievably, obtain and gun and force Mrs. Slater to hunt for her cane near the outdoor sorority house pool. Pranks are, of course, only as good as their execution, and Vicki’s coke-addled synapses don’t have the wherewithal to implement the frolicking tomfoolery. The gun goes off and the girls (Katey, Vicki, Liz, Jeanie, Diane, Morgan, and Stevie) inadvertently shoot Mrs. Sleater dead — well maybe.

The House on Sorority Row (also known as House of Evil in the United Kingdom) is a 1982 American slasher film written and directed by Mark Rosman, produced by John G. Clark, and starring Eileen Davidson and Kathryn McNeil. The plot follows a group of sorority sisters being stalked and murdered during their graduation party after they conceal a fatal prank against their house mother. Sorority Row feels ahead of its decade in how it subverts slasher expectations like women being helpless fawns and men getting away with sleazy behavior as locker room heroes.

The cult slasher has only grown in esteem and popularity since its 1983 debut thanks to the young cast and smooth story. After returning to the house and forcibly giving Katey a sedative, Dr. Beck reveals that Slater had a son named Eric, who was deformed and mentally underdeveloped due to an illegal fertility treatment he had given her. Eric arrives and hacks Dr. Beck to death while Katey searches for Vicki's gun, which does not fire.

Sadly, while we’d never see House on Sorority Row II, we did at least get a middling remake of House on Sorority Row, so that’s something. The girls hide Slater’s body and in an Edgar Allen Poe-esque Telltale Heart evolution, the girls begin to become paranoid all the while dealing with a killing-by-numbers killer who’s out to kill them. House on Sorority Row unfolds with a solid 40+ minutes of torture, mayhem, and murder where Katey, Vicki, Liz, Jeanie, Diane, Morgan, and Stevie ultimately get what’s coming to them. Try as they might, the ghost (?) of Mrs. Slater, or her proxy, will not let them off the hook for their dastardly deed. The House on Sorority Row is 9206 on the JustWatch Daily Streaming Charts today. In the United States, it is currently more popular than The Discoverers but less popular than Crazy on the Outside.

The one-sheet poster and advertising were created by Film Ventures International's regular advertising agency, Design Projects Incorporated. Design Project's owner, Rick Albert art directed the key art and title treatment design. The key art was illustrated by Jack Lynwood, who painted illustrations for many motion picture campaigns during the late 1970s and '80s. The copylines were written by distributor Film Ventures International's Edward L. Montoro.

Composer Richard Band’s score and the New Wave rock band playing in the party scenes are heard in crisp fidelity with few limitations beyond slightly timid higher frequencies. The sound design is fairly lackluster and primitive by today’s standards but fits the low-budget slasher’s grittier production ethos. Despite using familiar tropes and hewing closely to the usual slasher formula, The House On Sorority Row has surprisingly decent character development backed with a solid cast. The well-paced screenplay sets up the basic premise with panache while a few nice twists keeps the audience guessing. Sorority houses are a great setting for slashers and this movie is a first-rate example of that trend. A wild college party makes fertile territory for fresh kills and several memorable death traps.

● I erased “The House on Sorority Hill” multiple times because it’s all my fingers wanted to type. ● The remake/original spectrum continues to be best served with decades between and titles entrenched in their historical periods of horror movements. ● Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger have my trust as writers of multiple successful remakes. The single Blu-ray edition includes a fold-out mini-poster and a cardboard slipcover made up in the art style of an old VHS cover.

Titles like Pieces, Black Christmas, and The Dorm That Dripped Blood get more frequent mentions when discussing pre-90s sorority or dormitory slashers. Remake debates rarely include Sorority Row in their reassessments of unfairly stigmatized 2000s horror revamps based on nostalgia biases (among other reasons). It’s interesting how both seem equally less popular despite their amassed cult followings after meager box office openings. Dropping the surround remix from Scorpion’s limited edition Blu-ray, the theatrical movie version receives adequate 2.0 PCM in stereo.

Under her face shield, N95 mask, and sunglasses is the face of Jeanne Pritzker, one of the richest women in Los Angeles—a billionaire. Over the last year, she bought a $50,000 imported rug for the main floor, as well as bedding, outdoor furniture, and a painting by the Vietnamese artist Lê Thiét Cuong. She wanted to make sure there would be plenty of clothing available for job interviews and class presentations, so she packed a communal walk-in closet with professional attire for men and women. Despite being a huge fan of Drive, I avoided Only God Forgives for a long time because of its poor critical reception and excessively esoteric presentation.
